Comfort and Flavor at Terrace Restaurant in Greenville

Founder and CEO, Stewart Penick has brought his flavorful, comfortable dining experience to Greenville.  With two successful locations in North Carolina, Terrace offers traditional southern cuisine prepared in a more modern upscale style.

Signature Style of Southern Comfort Food

Stewart Penick, with persuasion from his nephew Jacob, opened their first Terrace location in 2009. With success in Charlotte and Ballantyne, North Carolina, Penick wanted to bring his passion for good food, in a comfortable atmosphere to Greenville.  “This has been a year and half process,” said Stewart Penick.  Remodeling a former auto repair shop, in the West End historic district may have been a tall task, but the dining room and bar area

are cozy, using warm earth tone colors. The high industrial ceiling along with the historic brick accent wall, above booth dining, exemplify the vintage design Greenville intended for this part of town.

Commitment to GreenvilleTerrace Restaurant Greenville

General Manager, Doug Stevens explained, “Terrace appreciates the Greenville area.”  Buying local ingredients, collaborating with Upstate favorite Dark Corner Distillery and featuring local artist paintings in the dining room exemplify their commitment to the area.

Featuring 20 craft beer breweries operating in the Carolinas.  All these breweries use local ingredients and share Terrace’s commitment to working with regional businesses.

Most of the vegan offerings include products from Asheville, North Carolina.

Savory, Flavorful Food

Along with signature dishes as shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles (being red velvet waffles) and fried green tomatoes, patrons will enjoy a variety of savory, filling dishes.

Breakfast includes traditional steak and eggs; biscuits and an incredible Lemon Poppy Seed French Toast.  Unusual but delicious, the lemon poppy seed bread is delectable with a mellow sweetness.

Penick discovered most who seek out brunch, still desire breakfast type fare, even after lunchtime.  Serving breakfast/brunch until 3 PM, visitors can enjoy other full-flavored offerings such as; pancakes, omelets and benedicts.

I plan to visit the Greenville Saturday Market, then enjoy brunch at Terrace.

Among many delights on the dinner menu (4 PM – 9 PM); Smothered Chicken, a grilled chicken breast, sauteed mushrooms, grape tomatoes and grilled onions.  Or you can enjoy the succulent, perfectly cooked Marsala Filet Medallions, which are seasoned and seared, served with mushrooms and Marsala sauce.  Both entrees include cheesy mashed potatoes which are creamy and soft.

Penick prides himself on his finely tuned menu full of flavor and a variety of butter sauces, along with his wife, Cindy’s dessert menu, with new sweet treats offered every few months.

Cindy’s Mini Chocolate Torte is a smooth semi-sweet chocolate mousse topped with chocolate ganache over chocolate cookie crumbs.

The Dining Experience

I am one of those who strategically plan a dining experience. Terrace illustrates my necessary criteria for a great restaurant.

                    Well-prepared, flavorful food

                    Exceptional Service

                    Enjoyable Experience

Terrace in Greenville illustrates all these criteria to a superlative level.

The wait staff was very attentive, prompt and courteous.

The restrooms, which in my opinion can tell the true story of a restaurant’s virtue.  The female bathroom was clean, beautiful and modern.

Not exceedingly large, the bathroom had warm decor and conveniently located.

From the Bar

Collaborating with Dark Corner Distillery has allowed Terrace to offer signature cocktails, available no where else.

  • Berry Shine Smash – moonshine with a berry puree
  • Blueberry Crumb Cake – Dark Corner Butterscotch Whiskey w/ blueberries and graham crackers
  • Southern Belle – strawberry, pineapple, Whiskey Girl Peach and Campari

For American Whiskey lovers, like me, Terrace has 37 bourbons and 15 single malt scotch varieties.

scotch bourbons Terrace Restaurant

And something very unusual for the Upstate, Terrace’s libations include four types of Japanese Whisky  including, Nikka; which won “Best of the Best” for their aged malt at the 2001 Whisky Magazines awards.  Japanese Whisky was rarely exported prior to 2001. Now, Terrace is one of the very few places serving this innovative spirit.

Terrace in downtown Greenville provides good, quality food, reasonably priced.  With an upscale-casual atmosphere, I plan to visit again for breakfast, lunch, dinner and I will visit after 9 PM on Friday or Saturday for their late night snacks and cocktails.

Please comment below if you visited and tell me your thoughts.

Sidewall Pizza is Popular in Travelers Rest

Sidewall PizzaI love dining at locally owned restaurants and Sidewall Pizza is a prime example.  A popular restaurant before I relocated to the Upstate, they now have 2 locations. Known for FULL-SIZE, loaded pizzas…you will never go away hungry at this establishment.

This place is always hopping.  With its simplistic exterior and casual setting, it is a great spot for cyclist to stop and dine.  Complete with bike racks, it sits adjacent to the Greenville Health System Swamp Rabbit Trail.  For those readers not familiar with the Upstate, the trail is a 21 mile multi-use green-way system that runs along the Reedy River connecting Greenville County with schools, parks, and local businesses.  Frequented by cyclists, joggers and all recreation enthusiasts, it is a great way to enjoy everything Greenville has to offer.

Conception of Sidewall Pizza

Sidewall Pizza Company was conspired by Andy O’Mara and Loren Frant, transplants to the Travelers Rest area.  They were originally looking at opening a canoe company, however, the community was hungry for a laid back, bohemian style restaurant to jive with the eclectic aura of Travelers Rest.  Opened in 2015, the restaurant’s menu is simply, pizza, salads, beer, wine and dessert.

sidewall pizza sidewall pizzaPizza’s are hand-made, 14-inch, thin crust with a variety of toppings and sauces.  Patrons can even mix things up and construct their own signature pizza from the “sauce, cheese, and toppings,” menu.

Their signature salads are made with only fresh ingredients and are a hearty portion.

The menu may not be complicated, but their pies are creative.  Specials are frequently posted on their Facebook page.

My “MEAT” pizza

sidewall pizzaI picked up the “protein pizza,” along with some bread sticks, served with a marinara dipping sauce. A “meat-lover’s” dream, this pie contains bacon, pepperoni, prosciutto, Italian sausage, mozzarella and Pecorino cheese.  The pizza was delicious, not overloaded with sauce, proving a pizza does not have to taste heavy. The only negative is I wish the crust had been crispier.  However, the thin crust was flavorful.

Our bread sticks seemed a bit dense, but were enhanced by the delicious marinara sauce.

Voted the Best Pizza 2016 Upstate Business Journal

Although a Thursday night, the restaurant was very busy.  Waiting 30 minutes for a “to-go” pizza was reasonable given the situation.  Service was very friendly and organized.  Although, I did not order alcohol, the bartender did supply me with some water while I waited.  The bar has 4 draft taps, which they rotate offerings frequently.  Over 20 beers are on the menu, bottles and cans, along with 12 wine choices.

sidewall pizzaEveryone in the restaurant ordered ice cream for dessert.  A local favorite, Sidewall Pizza offers enough flavors to satisfy the most finicky palate.  Everything from Horchata, a traditional Mexican vanilla cinnamon to a seasonal Pumpkin Pie Spice flavor.  Even several of the “to-go” orders were accompanied by scoops of ice cream.

Overall, my experience at Sidewall Pizza was above average.  I enjoyed the food, atmosphere and definitely will be returning for some of that home-made ice cream.

Thursday began a full 11 days of celebrating great restaurants in South Carolina.  Throughout the state, participating restaurants will be offering their culinary masterpieces for a discount, some offering multiple courses at the equivalent of one of their entrees.

This is a great opportunity to try a high-end restaurant at a great value.  I have visited several of these restaurants, see links below for my reviews.

Some adventurous foodies, may even try culinary styles they would not normally try.

Tickets are not required to attend this celebration; however, reservations are recommended.  Participating restaurants will fill to capacity quickly for dinners to experience such a great value.

Participating restaurants will provide special menus, slightly different than their standard menu.

Foodie Heaven at Lowes Foods

Based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Lowes Foods  opened their first location in the Upstate of South Carolina in late September.  I finally visited a couple of weeks ago and boy, was I amazed.

Visiting a Lowes Foods is not a normal trip to the grocery store, be prepared to spend most of the afternoon pursuing isles and isles of typical grocery store chain fair, but the additional amenities are what makes this supermarket stand out from the rest.

Extra Amenities at Lowes Foods

Pick and prep - Lowes Foods - joanns food bites
Pick & Prep. Customers can pick what produce they wish to purchase and Lowes Foods will prep the item to your particular need. You need sliced carrots for a gratin recipe? They will prep it for you.

herbs - Lowes Foods - joanns food bites
Need just a “sprig” of fresh basil for your pasta dish tonight. Lowes Foods has an assortment of fresh herbs, planted right in the store. You can clip and pay for only what you need.

potato - Lowes Foods - JoAnns Food Bites
Pick which potatoes you want and fill a small container perfect for two.

I usually only cook for two people and my husband hates leftovers, which proves to be difficult when buying produce.  Many produce options at Lowes Foods can be purchased in small quantities such as, mushrooms, herbs, carrots and peppers.  Stations have containers, you pick out what you want and items are sold by weight.

sausage case - Lowes Foods - joanns food bites
The sausage case offers in- house smoked sausages and local options too.
cheese shop - Lowes Foods - joanns food bites
Lowes Foods cheese shop offers unusual varieties of cheese and an expert help to find just the right one.

A moderate wine selection is available, however it is not as large as some other supermarket chains.

The meat case is impressive; but on two different visits I have made, both times, they were completely out of flank steak.

Also, they do not carry one of my favorite fish, Chilean Sea Bass.  I have to get that at The Fresh Market.

Full Grocery Store

Besides the special kiosks, Lowes Foods is a full size normal grocery store.  Similar to Kroger or Ingles, a variety of brands for each product are offered.

I found two refrigeration units full of Applegate natural and organic meats.

They also have “buy one, get one,” specials and a weekly sale advertisement.

With over 50,000 square feet and 120 employees, Lowes Food President Tim Lowe told the Greenville News, “Our Greer store will be very focused on supporting local, while providing exceptional attention to our guests.”

Hungry Customers Beware

Lowes Foods - joanns food bites

The finale of my Lowes Foods journey, meandered through the aroma of fresh bread baking in the bakery, as well as custom cakes being prepared.

The Chicken Kitchen offers freshly prepared chicken including wings, fried and rotisserie.

Sammy’s Sub Shop prepares fresh sandwiches to order and an in store coffee roaster prepares fresh cups.

The Beer Den

The Beer Den - Lowes Foods - JoAnns Food Bites

Finally, the APEX of the experience – THE BEER DEN.  With eight craft beers on tap and a variety of growlers or bottles ready to serve, The Beer Den provides shoppers with an unusual option.  Select a beer and sit at the spacious bar or sample while you shop.

Although I did not sample while I was there, this is an excellent place for husbands to hang out, while foodie’s shop.

Overall Impression

I was very impressed with Lowes Foods, founded by the same man who started Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse.

The spacious atmosphere and cleanliness of the new store made me feel very comfortable buying food here.

I love the produce department options, especially the “locally produced” section.

Having a traditional grocery store in the middle of everything makes shopping for household staples, toilet paper, toothpaste, etc convenient (cannot buy those items at The Fresh Market).

Checkout was speedy and easy.  Check out staff unloads your cart as they ring you up and curb pick it is available.

Lowes Foods has a frequent shopper rewards program, gas discounts and hands out S & H Greenpoints.  Accumulating these stamps can be applied towards purchasing kitchen gadgets or food discounts.

Lowes Foods plans to open 3-4 more locations in the Upstate, I am hoping one will be close to my house.

Location I visited is: 850 East Suber Rd. Greer, SC 29650

Eating Real Food to Lose Weight

being a food who needs to lose weight-joanns food bitesLast weekend, I saw an old friend of mine who has lost over 20 lbs this summer.  She looks great!  She was full of energy and seemed to have more pep in her step, than her usual good-spirited self.  I admit, I was jealous.

She says she has been calorie counting, eating real food and using the “My Fitness Pal” app.  So, of course, I downloaded it last night.

Ever since I accepted a desk job, almost 15 years ago, over my more physical job, where I was constantly walking, I have gained 50 lbs.  That is 50 lbs from my wedding weight.  I have used every excuse for the weight gain…

“I am happily married, so of course, I am gonna gain weight.”

“I am getting older.  Naturally, you gain weight as you age.”

“I am a food writer.  It is inevitable to gain weight because I am trying so many different foods.”

“I participate in a professional barbecue cook team…I am gonna taste what we put in the box for judges.”

For 18 years, I have said “these are reason’s, not excuses.”  THEY ARE NEITHER.  It is what I kept telling myself to justify that I have gained all this weight.  NO MORE!

Practice what I preach

On my blog, I preach about sustainability and “good quality food.”  Hell, I am just as guilty as my readers when it comes to eating processed foods.

NO MORE!

I need to avoid the processed food isles and stick to the produce, meat, dairy isles.  These are real foods, with exceptions, that make up a balanced diet.

First of all, I HATE the word D – I- E – T!

These are real foods, with exceptions, that make up healthy, good eating.

100 Days of Real Food Challenge

Today I received my copy of Lisa Leake’s second book, 100 Days of Real Food: Fast & Fabulous: The Easy and Delicious Way to Cut Out Processed Food.  This is a follow up to her first book, 100 Days of Real Food: How We Did It, What We Learned, and 100 Easy, Wholesome Recipes Your Family Will Love.
Lisa Leake-100 Days of Real Food Fast & Fabulous-joanns food bites
Several months ago I read her first book and loved it, but I lacked the motivation to dive in and try her method.  Today is a different story.

I want to succeed; therefore, I am taking on her 100 Days of Real Food and I will cut out processed foods from my daily eating habits.

Her motivating book not only contains family friendly recipes, but also mouth-watering photos to tantalize your taste buds.  Lisa gets her whole family involved in the kitchen.  Her girls are in several photos prepping vegetables and herbs.

She prefaces her recipes with tips and information on how to shop, buy and store food, for healthier living.  The “real food” method is not expensive.  Structure a meal plan for the week and buy only what you and your family will need.

Foods I will avoid

  • Hydrogenated oils
  • Trans Fats
  • Corn Syrup
  • Margarine
  • High Frutose Corn Syrup
  • Enriched Wheat Flour
  • Bleached or unbleached flour
  • Sodium Nitrite – a known carcinogen
  • Sodium or calcium propionates
  • Sodium diacetate
  • Lactic or acetic acid
  • Mono-digleycrides

Do you want to take the 100 Day of Real Food Challenge with me?  Reply to my blog and keep me informed on your progress.  I will post updates here.

Also, consider buying Lisa Leake’s book for great information and motivation to eat less processed foods and get healthy.

On Monday’s blog, I will have pictures and recipe from Lisa’s book, Easy Fish Tacos with Pico de Gallo.

**I received a free copy of Lisa’s book as compensation.

Comfort and Style at The Green Room

The Green Room marqueThe Green Room Restaurant and Bar was host to my first Greenville Blog Society Meet Up.  It was great meeting fellow bloggers, who upon receiving their first course for the night’s dinner,  pulled out their phones to take pictures.  I always feel awkward doing this when I dine with my husband.

Being a blogger, I am the stereotypical introvert.  Getting out of my routine work environment (home) and talking to complete strangers about my blog was a huge step for me.  I did enjoy the fellowship and conversing with

Johnathan Anderson – author of Yeah That Greenville Guide,

Tiffany Anderson and

Tiffany Paraskevas, blogger at Macarons and Coffee

Ambience of The Green Room

Last night was my first visit to The Green Room Restaurant and Bar.  A small, quaint place on Main Street in downtown Greenville, it is spacious enough to accommodate our blogger group of 12.  Besides us, there were approximately 50-60 other patrons mixed throughout the tables and booths, along the recently renovated space.

With warm, earth tones, the dining room feels like a cozy, retreat with a simplistic but lively decor.  The large front windows provide natural light and the wood floors, with the brick accent wall make for a comfortable dining room. The bar has over a dozen chairs and is wide for dining. Contemporary music plays overhead, but is not too loud to drown out casual conversation.

Service at The Green Room

Our group tables were ready upon my prompt 10 minute early arrival time.  Water glasses were already filled and ready when I was led to our accommodations.  I was immediately greeted by our assigned server, Sara and she was very polite and patience.  Little did she realize, she would have to repeat our specialized group menu over and over.  I was impressed with the staff’s professionalism and consolatory demeanor to our indecisive bloggers.

The Green Room special menu

Because we had such a large group, and we were bloggers, the chef prepared a specialized four-course menu to accentuate his most tantalizing offers.  I commend Chef John Acker for my delicious meal, which consisted of:

First course:  House Salad

Appetizer:   Spinach and Artichoke Dip

Entree:   Pan Roasted Airline Chicken Breast

Dessert:    Tiramisu

Food at The Green Room

The Green Room saladFirst course: House Salad was a mix of lettuce, English cucumbers, sliced red onion, already cut cherry tomatoes, croutons and a delicious green goddess dressing.  I was so relieved to see the onion and tomatoes were cut, prepared for me to eat and were not whole cherry tomatoes or an entire wedge of onion.  The salad was served chilled, along with the creamy dressing, which had a peppery flavor, but was not overwhelming.

Appetizer: Spinach and Artichoke Dip.  The dip had a creamy texture, much like a bisque, however, pieces of the spinach and artichokes were large enough to recognized exactly what you were eating.  Served with the most tender, moist pita chips I have every consumed, the portion was so large I could not finish it all.  It would have been a perfect appetizer for two. The Green Room Spinach and Artichoke dip

Entree: Pan Roasted Airline Chicken Breast.  Although I have no idea why this is an “airline” chicken breast, the roasting was perfect as it caramelized the skin just right for slicing consistency.  Boneless, the breast was tender and moist, with a light brown “herb chicken jus” sauce over the top, which mixed very well with the whipped potatoes and asparagus.

Dessert: Tiramisu.  Probably the most lite, fluffy tiramisu I have ever tasted.  The “ladyfingers” were not soggy and the cocoa flavor was not overpowering.  A great mixture of flavors, the Tiramisu (Italian for “cheer me up”) was a perfect ending to a fulfilling meal.

The Green Room tarimisu

Being an abstinent blogger is key to appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship a chef labors into each prepared dish.  I wanted to take my time and enjoy each course, Chef John Acker did an excellent job and I look forward to dining at The Green Room Restaurant and Bar again.

Elegance at Rick Erwin’s Clemson

Need a romantic, elegant dinner spot for a special night, Rick Erwin’s Clemson location fits the bill.  Opened in October 2014, the Patrick Square location is an upscale dining option for the nearby residents,  a casual pizzeria is across the street.  Plenty of free parking is available.  Surrounded by single family homes, town homes and upscale business offices, the restaurant is a good option for after work drinks or a quiet anniversary dinner for two.

Rick Erwin Clemson
Photo by Rick Erwin’s Dining Group

Upon entering the foyer, the bar is to the left and the dining room is to the right.  Rick Erwin’s offers a beautiful, modern bar area with over 300 wine selections.  The perfect spot to wind down after a busy day.

White linen tablecloths adorn the earth-toned dining room.  Calmly lit but very intimate, the dining room can accommodate 140 patrons.  Beautifully designed, the dining room reminds me of a wine cellar.  Oak, wood and earthy tones make the space comfortable  and imbued with sentimental overtones.

The mahogany bar area seats approximately 20 with a few high-top tables.  The bar opens at 4 PM, which allows time for a cocktail prior to the dining room opening, which is at 5 PM.   With prompt service, the well versed bar staff are familiar with all classic cocktails.

Time for dinner

Doug and I had just finished a business meeting in Patrick Square. We were in business casual clothing and did not want pizza.  We waited until Rick Erwin Clemson opended and decided to give it a try. We have not ate at his other locations, which are all in Greenville County.

Between us, we ordered a Manhattan and a Jack -n- Coke. Both were excellent, not too strong.  We decided to eat at the bar.

We ordered appetizers, including a half dozen of East Coast Oysters described as being served on the half shell with cucumber mignonette, horseradish, cocktail sauce, saltines. The oysters were large, fresh and delicious.  The mignonette, which can be frequently overpowering on oysters, was crisp and light. A mignonette is a condiment, traditionally served with oysters, is a sauce always made with shallots, cracked pepper and some type of vinegar.

I ordered the tempura broccoli, half portion.  I could not believe the size of this portion.  It was enough for two to enjoy as a meal.

Rick Erwin Eastside Tempura Broccoli[jbutton color=”white” size=”xsmall”]$6.00[/jbutton]

The tempura batter was a nice twist, however, the spicy, hoisin type sauce was too much.  I could barely finish 3-4 pieces.  The sauce was sweet and sticky, but did not resemble a barbecue sauce.  I was confused by this combination.

Entrees at Rick Erwin Clemson

Doug ordered the 14 ounce, Kansas City New York Strip, medium.  Cooked perfectly, with a beautiful presentation, his steak had a deep beef flavor.   The menu indicated “dry-aged” but the server was unable to tell us how long the steak had been dry-aged.

Rick Erwin Eastside New York Strip steak[jbutton color=”white” size=”xsmall”]$44.00[/jbutton]

[jbutton color=”red” rounded=”yes” size=”large”]Dry-aging beef is an expensive process, as the beef must be refrigerated for an extended amount of time, in near freezing conditions. Usually only butcher shops or high end steak restaurants can afford these accommodations. The process dries the surface of the meat and moisture evaporates from the muscle of the beef, forming a greater concentration of beef flavor. Also, the beef’s natural enzymes breakdown the connective tissue in the muscle, resulting in a much more tender cut of beef.[/jbutton]

I ordered the half portion of Pappardelle Pasta.  The pasta was tender and good, however, it did not hold the sauce very well.  It had a slightly doughy texture, which made the dish slightly dry.  The pork was delicious and accompanied the greens very well.  Overall, the dish was elegant and pleasing; however it is no longer on the Eastside location menu.

We enjoyed our impromptu visit to Rick Erwin’s Clemson location.  We look forward to dining at his other Upstate locations:

Gourmet Goodies at Vom Fass Greenville

Vom FassEver wanted to sample a whiskey before you bought it?  Ever want to taste an aged balsamic vinegar before you invested in a bottle?  You can do both of these at Vom Fass, a 258-store franchise operation.  Originally from Georgia, I never enjoyed the Vom Fass experience; relocating to Greenville has yet another benefit.  Ms. Jeanj Brodnax-Martin owns the Woodruff Road location with her husband, Michael.  Providing “the world’s best retail-sampling experience,” Vom Fass has a practical way to engage visitors.

The Vom Fass Experience

You will open the front and discover alcohol is on the right, vinegar and olive oils are on the left.  Of course, I headed right.  A canvas of whiskey, liqueurs and spirits are sitting in racks of labeled casks, each elegantly placed against a fully decorated wall with a delicate lever pour spout.  Hannah greets myself and my husband with a smile and offers to retrieve any sample we wish to try.  We are handed a delicate, small goblet, ideal for sampling.

Spirits

Vom Fass Spirits
Hannah explains the origin of the scotch whisky Doug is about to sample.

The brightness and comfort the room makes me feel comfortable immediately.  Seeing all the colored bottles, so ornately sitting on the glass shelves, I realized it would require several, possibly many trips to sample the vast inventory.  I started in the whiskey, scotch section.  I immediately fell in love with the American Whiskey.  Aged in American White Oak barrels, this classic corn mash spirit prides itself on being not only full-bodied, but also, very smooth.  No lingering burning in your throat like many domestic whiskeys harbor.  Shipped from Madison, Wisconsin, I advise all Vom Fass visitors to give this popular classic a try.

Never being a scotch fan, I moved on to the liqueurs.  All so beautifully displayed, the liqueurs parade many colors of the rainbow.  I decide to try the Caipirinha Lime.  It’s namesake is a traditional Brazilian cocktail, made from the fermentation of fresh sugarcane juice.  Although tart, the lime scent is refreshing. It was like drinking a key lime pie. Vom Fass Caipirinha Lime

I like vodka, therefore, I had to try Von Fass’s signature white vodka.  Distilled from American grain and apples, it was very smooth and I would consider it a sipping vodka to be enjoyed on the rocks.

Fruit Balsamic Vinegars

We finally moved to the left side of the store.  Being on a barbecue competition team, we are always looking out for good quality fruit infused vinegar.  The plethora of choices was almost overwhelming.  Doug decided to try the following:

Waldburg Balsam Apple Vinegar– Originally from Waldburg, Germany it is 6% acidity.  Although all vinegar is sour to me, the mango quality was very evident.  Hannah recommended trying the recipe, which was printed on a note card accompanying our bottle, Mango Guacamole, to be made with the vinegar.

Vom Fass Vinegar

Next Doug tried the Apple Balsamic Vinegar.  Amber in color, he liked the apple flavor married with a cider vinegar touch.  It could pair well with any type of pork dish.

Apple Balsamic Vinegar Vom Fass

Olive Oils at Vom Fass

With extra virgin olive oils – some aged, some from various countries around the globe and some infused oils – the choices are impressive for a foodie, like me.  Cooking with olive oil has become the staple at my home.  Benefits of cooking with olive oil, according to the “Olive Oil Times,”
[jbox color=”red”]

    • Reduces the risk of diabetes
    • 41% reduction in the risk for stroke
    • Slows the aging of the heart
    • Fights osteoporosis
    • Counters the oxidizing effect of the sun

[/jbox]

I limited myself to just trying the basil infused extra virgin olive oil from Italy.  Bright, light, and not overwhelming, it was very pleasing on my palette.  Last weekend, I prepared some ciabatta bread, of which I drizzled a bit of this olive oil and it was delicious. I will be returning to Vom Fass to purchase other kinds of olive oils.

For the gourmet foodie, this was a such an exciting experience.  The selection of gift boxes and ideas for the foodie in your life are indulgent.  The customer attention level is off the charts.  Hannah was so attentive and knowledgeable.  She took great care to wrap our bottles and hand label each one.  The “boutique” attention to detail was unparalleled for a gourmet market.

Please click the links I have indicated if you are interested in making a purchase of any of the aforementioned products.  Visit the Vom Fass website to see if a location is in your state.  I highly recommend scheduling a visit.

While at the Greenville location, I discovered Vom Fass has an oil & vinegar of the month club, and a wind & tasting club.  I may need to investigate these opportunities further, for a follow up article.

This was not a paid endorsement from Vom Fass to JoAnn Johnson.  I honestly, love this place.

Dive-N-BoarLocated in the Cherrydale community of Greenville, sits an inconspicuous joint called the Dive-N-Boar.  Sitting in a strip center, off a busy Hwy 291, you would not suspect that great things happen inside this place, like good food and great music!  Locals probably realize the appeal with Happy Hour from 4 pm – 7 pm with drink specials and $5.00 appetizers, this place is a great location to meet friends and unwind.

Friday and Saturday nights are JAM NIGHT with local musicians belting out their tunes and entertaining a full dining crowd.

Although currently undergoing a massive kitchen renovation, the vibe in this joint is happening but cozy.

The Bar Book

With a massive amount of infusion specialty drinks, everyone can find a cocktail to please their pallet.  oh, by the way, a full array of craft beer choices, many on draft are available, including Thomas Creek Brewery (our local favorite).

Raseberry muddleThis gem was conceptualized and beautifully executed by our bartender. I asked for something fruity, with vodka and he made this raspberry muddle delight.  It was light refreshing and one of those cocktails that would sneak up on you before you knew it…had to reserve it to just one.

As a second drink, I ordered the Organic Rosehip Jack Daniels – a specialty infusion, among many the Dive-N-Boar develop; however, they were out of stock. Kinda disappointing, but already looking forward to another visit to try it.

The renovation comes on the heels of ownership, Cultured Kitchens, hiring a new head chef, who will be “renovating” the menu as well.  Despite the new menu arriving next week, the food we enjoyed during our visit two weeks ago, was delicious.

Menu

Several appetizers were looking good but we settled on the Pulled Pork Potato Skins.  Large waffle potatoes covered with cheese, green onions, pulled pork and a smooth barbecue sauce, topped with sour cream.  The portion was adequate for one appetizer serving (the happy hour portion); however, was hoping for a larger portion for two to share it.

Dive-N-Boar appLoved the “to go box” packaging of the appetizer, but just needed to be larger to share.

As for our main entrees:

I ordered the BIG, BAD UGLY BURGER…large beef hamburger with cheese, bacon, lettace, tomato and onion.  It was a typical pub burger, no complaints.  I wish the barbecue sauce from our appetizer had been on the burger, might have bumped it up a notch. Ordered with your choice of side, mine, waffle potatoes of course.

Doug ordered the FISH & CHIPS.  Be aware, this was not a BEER BATTERED fish and chips, nor was it advertised as such; however, the cornmeal breading on the fish made it very difficult to eat. The breading was thick and heavy.  This might be one of the entrees “revamped” by the new chef.

Atmosphere and Service

Service was slightly above average.  The bartender did concoct a great drink and several different wait staff checked on us.  I would rate the atmosphere as light and friendly.  The bar is very large, “L” shaped and expands across the entire front of the restaurant.  A small stage is in a corner for those “Jam Nights,” and the kitchen sits in the middle.

Restrooms were clean and nice, located in the very back of the restaurant.  Several televisions are in the bar area for those sports fans and the sound system was top notch.  Set up to appeal to the 20-45 year old demographic, but comfortable enough for the slightly older crowd, like me.

I look forward to returning to Dive-N-Boar and checking out the new menu and cocktail list.  As of today, I would recommend this neighborhood spot.  I will write an update after the renovation.

Sizzling Steaks at Appalachian Grill

This photo of Appalachian Grill is courtesy of TripAdvisor

Appalachian Grill in Cartersville, Georgia

Located just 30 minutes northeast of Dallas, Cartersville can lay claim to one of the most quaint, romantic steak house restaurants in this area. The Appalachian Grill offers all standard cuts of beef (rib-eye, strip, filet, and sirloin) prepared in their own special way, with signature flavor and spices. Also on the menu are various fish and pasta entrees, with a small kids menu available.
However, the steaks are what most patrons come for. The rustic, mountainous charm presented in this small, cozy restaurant nestled in downtown Cartersville is an unsuspecting delight in suburbia.

Appalachian Grill interiorThe lighting is quite dim in the dining room; however, the bar area is bright but not spacious. On a good Saturday night, it can get down right crowded; plan accordingly. Waits can last up to an hour, but reservations are accepted. Mainly booths align the walls of the dining room, which are covered in a grayish stone façade; complimenting the Appalachian theme. Guest are seated by the hostess, during my visit, a waiter (Scott) immediately asked for our beverage of choice. A moderate wine list is available, as well as a limited bar.

Food at The Appalachian Grill

Most entrees are accompanied by a sensible salad, a portion that would satisfy some as the meal. Topped with dried cranberries and served with fish-shaped sweet cornbread; The Appalachian Grill can call these one of their signature offerings. Appropriately staggered next was our Cajun Popcorn appetizer. Crawfish, battered and lightly fried as “popcorn portions;” it was excellent. Very light and two sauces for dipping, a Cajun chipotle honey sauce and a standard cocktail sauce; they were unlike anything I have tasted before. Both sauces complimented the crawfish, very well.

The Blue Cheese New York Strip and the “Oscar Steak” were cooked to perfection. Each steak was severed with lump crab meat (no imitation stuff here), potato of your choice and vegetables. The asparagus with the “Oscar” was crisp, but savory – delicious. The baked potatoes on both entrees could’ve been cooked a bit longer because they were only slightly warm in the center. Nevertheless, the meal was delightfully prepared; dessert was out of the question. Only 4-5 items were on the dessert menu; however, daily specials are offered.

Wine

Charm, proximity, hospitality and excellent food make this steakhouse a pleasure. Although a bit more expensive than most chain steak restaurants; The Appalachian Grill is one of my favorites. A couple can have a three course meal and each a glass of wine, or two, under one hundred dollars.
